3 AI Startups Solving Collecting's Biggest Problems
Three startups are using AI to automate three different bottlenecks in collecting: Entrupy handles authentication, chck.ai handles condition grading, and Artsignal handles art market intelligence. Entrupy: authentication
Entrupy uses AI image analysis to verify whether a luxury item is real. High-resolution photos of an item's material grain, stitching, and hardware are compared against a database built from millions of authentic and counterfeit items. For bags and leather goods, Entrupy states a 99.86% accuracy rate and backs every certificate with a financial guarantee.
The technology grew out of four years of research with NYU, launched in 2016, and counts Facebook AI Research director Yann LeCun among its early investors. It now covers handbags, sneakers, streetwear, apparel, and fine jewelry, and is used by resellers, pawnbrokers, and marketplaces, including a rollout on the nonprofit auction platform shopgoodwill.com.
chck.ai: condition grading
chck.ai turns a smartphone photo into a graded condition report for a trading card — a task that traditionally meant mailing the card in and waiting weeks. It started inside IAC's innovation incubator as a consumer app called Shoebox, then rebuilt itself as chck.ai, now positioned as an AI condition layer that marketplaces, dealers, and auction houses can plug into via API.
The product has two speeds: Quick CHCK reads a card's condition from two photos in seconds, for fast triage at a card show or while sorting inventory. Full CHCK steps up to an 18-image guided workflow for certification-level confidence.
Artsignal: art market intelligence
Artsignal generates a research report on any artwork from just an image and the artist's name — auction history, exhibition record, market outlook, and comparable artists. It calls itself the first agentic AI platform built for art and collectibles, and in September, Christie's Ventures made its first-ever investment in an art-intelligence technology company by backing it.
Artsignal states its goal is closing an access gap: most collectors can't afford a professional art adviser, so it's built to offer adviser-grade insight to those who'd otherwise have to guess at valuation and timing.
